Tips for Buying Big and Tall Men’s Clothing

More of us are finding we need to look in the big and tall mens clothing section when we go shopping. It’s hard to tell if we’re eating more, exercising less or perhaps both but, the market is growing at an alarming rate. For people who fit into this category, including yours truly, it’s good news as we get greater choice as more companies enter the market. There was once a stigma attached to buying clothes for big and tall men. Many people considered shoppers in these stores “fat” and “unhealthy” and that is why so many men avoided them.

The good news is that social stigma is pretty much a thing of the past. You see, things have changed with regard to clothing sizes, what was once considered a “normal” size often falls into the “big and tall” category. So these days it’s very common to see these sizes in regular stores, also the fashion industry and designers are working more and more in this size category. Everyone wants to look good, so read on to discover some tips you can use to dress your best.

With the internet it’s now braid dead simple to find big mens clothing but personally I refer to buy from a real store. Primarily I like to make sure the clothes fit and feel right first. Sizes vary between different companies depending on where their clothes are made. You can’t always trust the sizes on the labels, so be sure to try them on before you buy and leave. Clothing sizes are not standardized, anymore – so there will be variations in all sizes. There can be wild variations with some being huge on you, while others being grossly too small. This avoids the dreaded return trip to the store to get something that fits. So just trying on first, in the first place, may save you a return trip plus getting annoyed about it later. But it’s probably happened to everyone, they just grab something that’s the “right size” because it looks really cool, but after they get home it doesn’t look cool on them? When buying big and tall shirts the choice of material makes a lot of difference. Just because a shirt looks good when on display doesn’t mean it will look the same when you wear it. The way the material hangs makes a big difference.

Be careful about sizes in different stores because sizes really are no longer uniform across the board.

Be mindful about the stores return policies, and try to avoid assuming a size you know you wear will fit. It will be convenient if you can try to keep in mind what your measurements are so when you’re shopping you’ll know where to start looking. It may be helpful to begin looking at sizes that are one size larger. So if it’s too big, or small, you’ll need one size smaller or larger.

Try to choose fabric types that can offer you support for your frame. Denim can be a great choice for bigger men as it can withstand more weight than slacks or khaki pants. Denim can actually hold some of the weight in whereas pants made of lighter fabric can accentuate your curves and make them more prominent. Choose your fabrics carefully. Lighter, flowy fabrics can often make you appear much larger than you are, even though they tend to breathe a little better in some cases. It’s really not difficult to find big and tall men’s sizes with a little bit of effort. You are no longer required to shop at specialty stores that cater to people of your size. And with the vanity sizing, you may find yourself not a part of that size category, anymore. Another thing that has changed is some previously ‘normal’ sizes are now called, big and tall – so stores are more likely to have your size, too. You’ll be able to find the size that’s right for you, just need to think a little out of the box.
